Asthma Program Overview

 

Optima Health’s Asthma Program provides you with information to help keep you, or your child’s, asthma under the best possible control. The program encourages members to work with their physician to develop and stick with a treatment plan to keep their asthma under control.

 

Any Optima Health Plan member with asthma can participate in the program.

 

If you would like more information, please call the Member Services telephone number on your Optima Health member card and you will be connected with a case manager who can help answer your questions about asthma.

Take Control of Your Asthma

  • Learn all about asthma*. Understand that asthma can be life-threatening.
  • Develop a plan for treating your asthma with your doctor. Keep a copy of your Asthma Action Plan (.pdf) at home.
  • Take your medications everyday as ordered by your doctor. Remember to take all of your medications with you when you visit your doctor, including over-the-counter medications.
  • Get a flu shot* (if recommended by your doctor).
  • Quit smoking. Call 1-800-SENTARA for the free “Get Off Your Butt: Stay Smokeless for Life”* program.
  • For children at school:
    • Have an Asthma Action Plan (.pdf) signed by your doctor on file at school.
    • Have an inhaler at school for your child’s use, as needed.
